2) Inspecting This Old House

Course L2785 (2 credits) December 16 from 6 - 8 pm
When inspecting an old house, inspectors need to acquire a keen “old house” eye. What you know about newer homes rarely translates well to pre-war structures. They have a language all their own, different components, and were constructed under a whole different set of rules! In fact, some of these houses were built without rules! And somehow, there they stand in their magnificence, centuries later! In this class we will take apart old homes, to analyze the common, and not so common, defects you will run across, but only if you know how to speak their language. All aspects of old houses will be touched upon, including structural, electrical, plumbing, and heating.

Course L2333-02 (2 credits) December 16 from 8:15 - 10:15 pm
This course is designed to familiarize home inspectors with a general understanding and the basic design of oil-fired heating equipment, specifically warm air furnaces and water heaters. We will take a deep dive into the different and unique components used that are specific to this type of equipment and go through the details on how each one operates, and how they function together to provide heat throughout a building. We will also go through the cycle of operation and how we, as home inspectors, inspect this equipment. Additionally, we will discuss some of the similarities and differences between oil-fired and gas equipment.
